Shank
It refers to the height of the boots and their ability to protect the ankle. The choice of the length of the shank of your hiking boots for ladies will depend on the type of terrain that you have customary to frequent. In this type of terrain, under no circumstances is the use of low shank boots recommended. The shank of a hiking boot can be mainly of two types which are as follows;
Medium
It provides greater comfort than the high one, and it is ideal for those terrains that are little or flat. Having the ankle attached will give you greater stability and will protect you from unwanted slips and strains. It is ideal for low or medium mountains.
High
With this type, you guarantee a greater protection of the ankle, and it is a perfect characteristic to cross steep terrain and with high unevenness. In short, they are boots for high mountains.
Membrane
The membrane of the hiking boots is a feature that you should take into account when purchasing your footwear for the mountain. It refers to the type of material with which most of the hiking boots are made. The most used to be the best are Gore-Tex or Sympatex, the insulating membranes that provide high transpiration and durable waterproofing.
In general, they consist of hydrophilic polyester or microporous Teflon membranes. As they are not insulated, you may get wet immediately. Of course, the price of these is quite cheap.
The choice of one or the other will depend on the type of route you are going to take and whether you are an expert hiker or mountaineer, or, on the contrary, you are starting in this activity. Our recommendation is that if you are going to spend many hours walking on the mountain, do not hesitate to choose the hiking boots with Gore-Tex. Undoubtedly, you will appreciate it.
Hiking Boots with Membrane
They are especially suitable for cold, humid or rainy terrain or places and for those who often spend long hours walking on the mountains.
Boots without Membrane
The boots without membrane are ideal for the hottest months of the year or for the warmer regions. They are more breathable than the boots with membrane, and they dry fast and are more economical.
In spite of this, you should keep in mind that in the marked you often have to cross rivers and streams. If you do not have a membrane, your feet will become wet.
